ECC History

In 2009 the ECC celebrated 25 years of educational ministry to our community and church. These first 25 years, God has allowed us to come alongside thousands of families, partnering with them to provide loving, Christian care with excellent learning experiences for their young children.

The ECC began as a dream for Jan Cox (wife of former pastor David Cox) and several of our Church at the Crossing families who at the time had very young children and were looking for a way to support one another. From there, our Mother’s Day Out program began and quickly preschool classes were being considered for the growing need.

Jan made acquaintances of two women who were themselves preschool teachers and who had just opened a preschool in a nearby Nora church. Heading into the winter months it became clear their needs were outgrowing the capabilities of their host church and before winter break began, they started speaking with Jan Cox about relocating the school to a nearby congregation who was itself only a few years into its new building on Haverstick Road.

After the Christmas Break, the preschool re-opened as one facility in our current location, with Jan Cox serving as the director. The following year Jan hired new teachers and assistants and the program was off the ground. While the Mother’s Day Out continued, God seemed to also bless this new preschool with a class for 4-year-olds and 3-year-olds.

In 1991 the advisory board called a new director, John Drake, to transition in as Jan transitioned to Anderson, Indiana to become the National Children’s Director for the Church of God. In subsequent years the ECC has seen the addition of more classes, a major remodeling of the playgrounds, and the opening of a full time child care ministry: The Neighborhood. Currently the Early Childhood Center serves 220 students weekly and as part of church’s Children’s Ministry remains an important front door ministry of our church to the families of Indy’s Northside and Hamiliton County.
